Beat the Blogger...

There's really only one new film that anyone is going to care about this weekend: Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience will take over the number one spot. The Jo Bros. should do a similar opening to their female counterpart, Hannah Montana last year. Expect around $30 million for them.

Everyone's favorite gun-toting granny, Madea, will slide to number two with just under $20 million. Expect to see a jump for Slumdog Millionaire after winning all of the Academy Awards last weekend with about $12 to $14 million.

Rounding out the top five with be those strong hold overs, Taken and Coraline, each making $6 to $8 million dollars.

The only other new opener this weekend will be the kiddie aimed Street Fighter reboot starring Chris Klien, Smallville's Kristin Kreuk, and Desperate Housewives' Neal McDonough. It'll make around $5 million.

So post your predictions in the comments section and we will crown a winner on Sunday.

Tyler Perry's curvaceous Madea went to town with audiences this weekend. Giving the writer/director his biggest opening ever with just over $41 million dollars for Madea Goes to Jail.

Next were a trio of films that just keep chugging along. Taken, Coraline, and He's Just Not That Into You. Best Picture nominee (possibly winner?) Slumdog Millionaire rounds out the top five with a 10% increase to make $8 million this weekend.

Last weekend's big opener, Friday the 13th, was expected to have a decent drop off as is usual with any movie with a huge opening. But with 80% the future is looking about as bright for the film as those of the kids in the film.

Another interesting weekend in Hollywood. I guess everyone is going to the movie theaters to escape the depressing news.

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail should take on box office cake with ease, just like all of Perry's have previously. Expect the film to do about $22 million. Last week's number one film Friday the 13th is going to have a big drop off this week so it should settle nicely around $15 million in the number two spot. That will be followed by also rans He's Just Not That Into You, Coraline, and Taken. The other new film Fired Up! should do $5-7 million dollars.

Talk about over/under. Friday the 13th debuted much higher than expected with a record setting $42 million dollars between Friday and Sunday. The film only cost $16 million to produce, which was recouped by the end of business Friday.

Coming in at number 2 is He's Just Not That Into You with just under $20 million dollars. Coming in third place was the extremely durable Taken. Debuting in fourth, under the expectations I gave, was Confessions of a Shopaholic at $15 million. That was barely ahead of last weekend's Coraline.

The International
debuted in seventh place with an expected $10 million.

With Valentine's Day and President's Day both falling on the same weekend expect to see movie theaters packed. That's good news for the three new movies opening, as well as hold over He's Just Not That Into You.

The biggest one coming out, and sure to dominate the competition, is the Friday the 13th reboot. Expect that to lock up the top spot with around $30 million. Second and third place will belong to the ladies. HJNTIY and Confessions of a Shopaholic will run neck and neck with both doing around $20 million. Me thinks Confessions should take numero dos though, if for nothing else it is younger skewing and the kiddies have off from school on Monday and not all professionals do.

Clive Owen and Naomi Watts will land in fourth as The International will do just under $15 million. This should take the steam out of Taken, which will round out the top five.

This weekend's box office was a bit of a surprise. The date night flick He's Just Not That Into You was proposed to do around $20 million, but opened much bigger at number 1 with $27 million dollars. It was followed by former top spot holder Taken, which had almost no drop off (just 17% percent) from last weekend.

Steve Martin's sequel Pink Panther 2 fell short of many expectations with just $12 million, about $8 million less than the original a few years ago.

The other pair of newbies this weekend included Coraline, which exceeded predictions to gross $16 million and end up at number 3. Push (poor Chris Evans hasn't been able to find a hit movie that doesn't include superheroes, and the prospects of him finding one are becoming more bleek) opened at number 6 hitting the prediction bulls eye with $10 million.

This weekend has a handful of films opening up that are sure to accommodate everyone's appetite. Whether they will be the $10.00 and two hours of your life is another story. Let's who can predict the box office better, you or I.

My predictions:
It's going to be close for number 1. Pink Panther 2 and He's Just Not That Into You will battle it out. Panther should do around $20 million while Not That Into You will do just under and settle for number two. The marketing will get those happy couples celebrating an early Valentine's Day. (See my review tomorrow)

Taken will slide down to third with $10-12 million. Coraline should do around $10 itself. The wildcard is the Chris Evans actioner Push which will probably do somewhere between the two.

Now what do you think will happen???
